Nike Launches New Air Jordan Golf Shoe

Nike recently pulled out of the golf equipment business but they are keeping their hands firmly in the golf world.  While they may not be making clubs anymore, the company is taking their apparel creation to a new level.

Yesterday it was announced that Nike will be bringing a new golf shoe to the shelves, introducing the Air Jordan 1 model to the course.  The Air Jordan 1 is a tribute back to the high top version that first appeared for basketball players in the 1980s.

Bringing back this classic design is special for Michael Jordan because he holds the original close to his heart. “The Air Jordan I was the first sneaker that really pushed the limits on what was acceptable,” Jordan said.  “It’s like being a young kid, when his parents say he can’t do something but he wants to do it.  I felt like I wanted to be different.”

While the design is based upon the original Air Jordan 1 released in the 1980s, there are some differences that are found in the modern remake.  The obvious difference are the golf spikes but there is also extra padding in the shoe and a waterproof, leather upper half.

Nike hopes that the limited edition Jordan shoes will make a splash in the golf world, much like the Air Jordan did to the world of basketball.  There is also some irony in Nike bringing the Air Jordan 1 to the golf game because, according to Gentry Humphrey, VP Nike Golf footwear, “…Michael started to take up the game of golf in 1984, the exact same year Nike started to develop the Air Jordan 1.”

The Air Jordan 1’s will be available in two specific color schemes, white/black/red or white/silver, and will be available on the Nike website and some stores starting on February 10th.
