Cape Cod is a popular destination among Northeastern residents looking to escape for long weekends for some great New England seafood, shopping, activities, and some really awesome golf. Because of my obsession with the game, it was only appropriate that I sneak away from my recent vacation for 18 holes but I had to make sure it was the best of the best that Cape cod has to offer. After finding Ocean Edge, I can certainly say that I have found the best.
Our team had a crisp 55 degree Saturday morning for the daunting task that lied ahead. We are very familiar with Jack Nicklaus design and signature courses and we knew that beauty and challenge we’re on the menu for the day. That said, here are our key takeaways about the course, facility, staff, and other amenities that Ocean Edge Golf Club has to offer to both members and guests.
Depending on where you enter (if you’re not already staying at the Villages at Ocean Edge) on your way in you’ll have the opportunity to drive through the facility for a few minutes and you’ll pass a handful of the breathtaking holes that wind through the property. Excitement takes over you when you drive past a picturesque par-5 and you can tell the grounds crew has worked tireless hours making sure it stays that way.
Before we can even get out of our parked car the starter was already at our car with his golf cart eagerly waiting to take our bags and get us set up for the day. After being offered some hot coffee/water, we laced up and went in to greet our host and course golf pro, Brandon Roseth. We’ll talk more about Brandon in a few, so first let’s talk about our experience around the facility and out on the course.
The Range and Practice Areas
Who doesn’t love a well-maintained grass range stocked with balls and tees readily at your disposal? The range at Ocean Edge was fully equipped and had a few landing zone greens out there, but it’s short. Unless you max your driver out about 230, you won’t be taking it out on the bag to warm up. Regardless, that wasn’t really an issue as we took plenty of warm-up shots with the other twelve clubs in the bag.
Here’s a shot of me putting in some wedge work on the Ocean Edge range before my round.
The club also features well-maintained practice areas for bunker practice, as well as chipping and putting facilities all within a 20 foot walking distance from the starter. Sometimes we arrive at a club to find out that there is either no range, or no practice area, but this was perfect and ideal for getting loose before our round.
In an attempt to build a little excitement for the experience ahead of us we teased ourselves the day earlier by driving through the grounds of Ocean Edge. It’s a quiet, comforting development with golf holes intertwined throughout. The course itself was in great shape despite it being very early in the season—we played our round at the end of April and we can only imagine how pristine this place will be between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Our team played from the Blue/Black tees, a combination of the tips and the tees right before them and needless to say, it was long. Our advice here would be to play tees to your handicap. For example, if your a 16-22 handicap, stick to the white tees.
Ocean Edge offers golfers a beautifully landscaped golf course with unique challenges such as tight tree-lined fairways and strategic water and bunkers. The greens were in great shape and even a novice can tell that the grounds crew is passionate about their work.
Here’s a look at the daunting Par-3 16th which (from the long tees) challenges players with a 203-yard shot over a lake to an undulating green protected by bunkers.
Although difficult, a little challenge is not necessarily a bad thing and we see this golf course as the premier track to play when visiting Cape Cod. Better yet, if you’re a local, you shouldn’t hesitate to inquire about membership here. The place looks like it has it all. But, from an overall course rating, we give this gem a solid 4.5 out of 5.
Ocean Edge truly has everything you want from a golf course including picturesque views, a little challenge, some fun holes, and the occasional water hazards that make you focus just a little bit more.
The Head Pro
Every great course needs a friendly and helpful professional to help us feel good about our games. Enter Brandon Roseth, a Florida Gulf Coast University graduate with over five years experience as a golf pro. Brandon was extremely gracious and we couldn’t be more thankful for his hospitality that day.
Here’s a shot of me and Brandon (wearing blue) as we come up on the last couple of holes of the day.
After playing a full 18 with Brandon we can tell you that his tempo both on and off the course is comforting. Your tempo and rhythm are very significant in this game and a good coach or teacher should possess these traits. His game was solid and he graciously offered us plenty of great tips and quick-fixes throughout our round. I can tell you from experience that you’re in good hands with Mr. Roseth.
Overall, the best way to describe this course is as follows: When I find myself back in Cape Cod, I will seek no other courses. Ocean Edge ranks in our book as top notch for service, course design, food, course pro, friendly members, facility, etc. I’ll be back for sure, but maybe next time I’ll stick to white tees!
Bravo Ocean Edge Golf Club on a job well-done!
