Paul Azinger on Brooks Koepka: “He Should Relinquish His Ryder Cup Spot”

Former Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger didn’t mince words when asked about his thoughts on Brooks Koepka’s attitude towards the Ryder Cup.

Koepka was quoted earlier this week talking about the difficulties the American’s have faced in recent Ryder Cup History.

“It’s different,” Koepka said in an interview with Golf Digest:

“It’s hectic. It’s a bit odd, if I’m honest. I don’t want to say it’s a bad week. We’re just so individualized, and everybody has their routine and a different way of doing things, and now, it’s like, OK, we have to have a meeting at this time or go do this or go do that. I can barely see my [personal] team. It’s hard to even go to the gym … There’s no time to do that at the Ryder Cup. There’s no time to decompress.”

Some interpreted Koepka’s comments as an overall bad attitude towards playing on this Ryder Cup team. Hence, why Azinger made some pretty heated comments towards Koepka.

“I’m not sure he loves the Ryder Cup that much, if he doesn’t love it, he should relinquish his spot and get people there who do love it,” Azinger said to Golf.com.

“Not everybody embraces it. But if you don’t love it, and you’re not sold out, then I think Brooks — especially being hurt — should consider whether or not he really wants to be there. And if you add the Bryson dynamic to that, that would be an even easier decision for him.”

But Azinger wasn’t done there.

“I personally feel like it’s gonna be one or the other,” Azinger said. “That Brooks and Bryson can put the United States on their shoulders and carry this Ryder Cup team, or they can also be a royal pain in the neck.”

It seems that the former Ryder Cup captain is giving an ultimatum, that one of the other has to go, in his eyes.

This is how I imagine Brooks feels about having to play in the Ryder Cup at this point:

Do you think Azinger has a point and Brooks should have his position taken by someone who wants to play?

Does the US have the necessary buy-in to knock off the strong European squad? I guess we’ll find out next week…
