Paul Casey was in contention on Monday going into the final round at THE PLAYERS. When he got to the 16th tee he was just two shots back of leader Cameron Smith.

He knew it was time to attack…

Casey unleashed his drive down the fairway which he claimed was his “best drive all day” but he got very unlucky.

Casey’s ball landed in a pitch mark left on the fairway from someone else’s drive earlier in the tournament. It sunk right in almost like it was plugged but it was not and Casey had to play it as it lied.

Instead of being able to go for the green and potentially make an eagle, Casey had to punch out of the hole.

After the round Casey said, “You need a little bit of luck sometimes, don’t you? That wasn’t very good luck, was it?”

“It would have been brave, but maybe foolish to try to go for it. But it’s a shame. It was the best drive I hit all day,” said Casey.

As a player on the PGA TOUR, you should be rewarded for hitting the fairway. You shouldn’t have to hit your ball out of a divot that was left there from someone who played before you. You should get to remove your ball from the divot and place it directly next to where the divot is, no closer to the hole.

These guys are already playing incredibly tough conditions, they shouldn’t be punished for hitting the ball where they are supposed to.

Is it time that the PGA TOUR changes this rule and allows player to take their ball out of divots or pinch marks if they hit their ball in the fairway?
