PGA of America Oldest Member Celebrates 106th Birthday

There is an old sentiment held by people that golf is an old man’s sport. There are many young golfers who have proven that statement mostly false this season but older players are still holding strong to that theory.

One of the people that’s showing the world the golf isn’t being taken over by young bucks is Gus Andreone. Andreone, a resident of Sarasota, Florida, is the oldest member of the PGA of America and he just celebrated his 106th birthday. And ever since gaining PGA membership in 1939, Andreone has never stopped golfing no matter where he has lived.

Living in Sarasota, it has been more difficult for Andreone to get back out on the course because of the hot weather and Hurricane Irma. Typically, Andreone can be found on the nearby Palm Aire Country Club at least twice a week, making sure his game is still up to par. He was finally able to get to Palm Aire last Wednesday, where the club celebrated his birthday a little early with a quick round and a birthday cake.

If you’re wondering how Andreone is able to continue to golfing at his age, he has a simple answer for you. “Do something outdoors like golf,” said Andreone said as a tip for longevity. “This game has been my life, and it has never disappointed. I get on my feet, am out among friends and you keep moving.”

Over his 106 year life, you can imagine that Andreone has done a lot on and off the golf course. On the course, Andreone has hit a remarkable eight separate hole-in-ones and holds the course record of 66 at Edgewood CC and St. Clair CC, a country club just outside of Pittsburgh. Outside of golf, Andreone served our country admirably, earning three bronze stars in World War II and also won the Pennsylvania Lottery in 1983.

So while it may seem like golf is entering a youth movement at its top level, don’t forget and never count out the guys like Andreone or they may make you regret it once you tee off.
