Is Rory Signing with TaylorMade?

It’s been over three years now since Nike threw (what was rumored to be) $200 million at Rory McIlroy to don the swoosh from head to toe and throughout his bag.  With the recent news of Nike leaving the golf equipment space, you can bet that TaylorMade is looking to add a high caliber player to their already star-studded lineup.

With guys like Dustin Johnson and Jason Day already fitted from driver to putter with TM equipment, it seems as if adding Rory would be the icing on the cake.  If this news were to go through today (which it not), TM would own the top three golfers in the world.

It’s fairly possible that soon both guys in the picture above will be wearing the same logo on their apparel and featuring the same clubs in their bag.  Jason Day was rumored to sign an apparel deal with Nike during the FedExCup Playoffs not too long ago.

At the Barclays,  Rory mentioned to the media how he was going to begin testing clubs from different manufacturers in the off-season and he wasn’t ruling out adding new clubs until he figures out which are best suited for his game.

“I might start tinkering a little bit in the off-season and see what else is out there,” McIlroy said.

As fans of the game most of us feel that, to be honest, it doesn’t really matter what clubs the pros play.  Instead we are often more fascinated by how much money these guys earn from switching clubs and signing long-term deals.  Heck, Nike quit the equipment business which essentially frees up the opportunity for Rory to earn another tremendous sponsorship.  Sounds like an extremely lucky opportunity for Rory (and Tiger).

What we do know for certain is that Rory packed a TaylorMade M2 3 wood in his travel bag to China for this week’s WGC-HSBC Champions.  By the looks his tee shot with it on a driveable Par 4 yesterday, it seems as if Rory is digging the M2 line 3 wood.  Unfortunately he missed the putt for eagle so perhaps he’ll be calling Scotty Cameron soon for his hold putter back.
