Round 1 Recap: The Travelers Championship
David Mathis didn’t waste any time Thursday with his hole-in-one to take a one stroke lead in he first round of the Travelers Championship. It was a great start for he American, with a birdie-ace-birdie that took him to a 64 (-6) at TPC River Highlands.
“I played really solid all day and was hitting a lot of great shots,” said Mathis as he interviewed after his stellar performance.
With temperatures reaching 100 degrees in Connecticut, we watched U.S. Open Champion Webb Simpson play alongside Masters Champion Bubba Watson and 2011 PGA Championship winner Keegan Bradley. Bubba, who won here in 2010, began his round with back-to-back birdies and an eagle on a Par 4 on the back nine from 137 yards out.
Simpson and Watson finished their rounds with a 66 (-4) T5. “It was fun playing with those guys and we just fed off each other…” said Simpson after the round.
Bradley finished two under with a 68.
Other notables such as Matt Kuchar finished with a 67 (-3) T15 and recent TOUR winner Zach Johnson finished with a 72 (+2) T89.
