Tournament Preview: The Traveler’s Championship (June 21-June 24)

I’m sure a lot of tour players will be thrilled to leave Olympic Club and head across the country to an ‘easier’ course.  This year’s Travelers Championship will be played at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, CT.

It’s safe to say that most of the players coming off an exhausting week in San Francisco will be relieved to play some golf at River Highlands.  The course is a par 70 that measures 6,841 yards, which happens to be the shortest track on the PGA schedule in 2012.  It may certainly play well for the longer drivers like Bubba Watson.   Last year Patrick Cantlay shot a course record 60 here, so you can tell it’s easy to score on this course.

With easy fairways and greens to hit, TPC River Highlands is also ranked as one of the easiest courses in putting over the last 4-5 years.

The weather is beginning to heat up as the temperatures will hit the 90s on the Day 1 and some rain might come into play in the days following.

Players to keep your eye on this week:

Matt Kuchar is playing in his first Traveler’s Championship since 2008.  After placing T27 at Olympic last week, he looks to gain some ground in the FedEx Cup Standings by increasing his cuts-made streak to 21 straight.  He is currently 13th on TOUR in greens hit – so he could be a major contender here.

Ryan Moore has been making a name for himself – in fact, he finished co-runner up at the Travelers twice (including last year).  With a River Highlands scoring average of 66.17, he is certainly a top pick in our opinion – a true contender this week.

Look for Webb Simpson to carry the momentum over from his win at the U.S. Open last week and Zach Johnson to bounce back from his missed cut in Memphis and T41 finish last weekend.

We see great scores this week if the weather permits, but don’t anticipate fast greens, thick rough, and San Francisco fog this time around.
