Scotty Cameron is welcoming a new Phantom Prototype to the PGA Tour, and it will be in play at this week’s Sony Open in Hawaii, giving players and fans a first look at four of the new mallet designs that the legendary brand will bring to the table in 2024.

Along with the four new designs shown at this week’s Sony Open, there will also be six additional models in the Phantom Family that will be unveiled in the coming weeks.

One of the first players to use the new Scotty Cameron Phantom models was Cameron Young, who moved to a Phantom 5 knuckle neck prototype, which he tested at home before playing it at Kapalua last weekend.

Young said:

“That Phantom shape, for one, helps my alignment. And then also just the forgiveness of a mallet is important. I feel like anything that you can do to make the off-center hits just a little better is always a good thing.”

Blade putters are popular for a variety of reasons, but mallet heads are great for adding a little bit of forgiveness that you would not get in a traditional blade. The blade design is more likely to give players feedback, while mallets allow players to get away with slightly off-center hits.

Max Homa, who has used Phantom models for his last five PGA Tour victories, is also gaming a new prototype from Scotty Cameron.

Homa said that mallets ended up being a difference maker in his face control, which ultimately helped culminate in a victory at the 2021 Genesis Invitational:

“…when I switched to that, I felt like it just became a lot more predictable just because I could take out a variable… Speed control became much easier with the Phantom style. I felt like because of the weight of the head or just the way it swung, I just felt like it was a lot easier to control my putts from 15 to 25 feet.”

In the coming weeks, Scotty Cameron will officially launch the new line of Phantom Putters, which continues to be a favorite of PGA Tour professionals.
