Shane Lowry’s Grandma Delivers Hilarious Post-Round Interview

The Open Championship brought a lot of excitement in the run-up to find out who would get their name etched on the Claret Jug. That excitement quickly faded, however, as Shane Lowry ran away with the event over the weekend.

Lowry was fantastic, keeping himself in the hunt on Thursday and Friday with two 67s but really took off on Saturday when he shot an outstanding 63 round to take a four-shot lead heading into Sunday. He never surrendered that lead, even after shooting +1 in his final round and won the event by six strokes over Tommy Fleetwood.

The best part of Lowry’s first major win, and only his second win on the PGA TOUR, is that he and his family had a heck of a celebration. Lowry’s grandma might have been the one that stole the stage, however, as she gave one of the best post-round interviews we’ve seen in a while. Talking about her grandson, Emily Scanlon talked about all of the happiness and the stress that she was under.

“Oh, terrible. Emotional now, it was,” Scanlon said. “I hadn’t slept last night. I hadn’t drank a brandy since 2009 and I drank two yesterday—it’s nearly killing me.” Outside of her drinking two brandies, she also gushed about how proud she was of Shane. “Oh, I am a proud granny. Oh, I am,” Scanlon added. “It’s great to live and see all this happen, you know.”

And it wouldn’t be an interview with grandma if there wasn’t an embarrassing story thrown into the mix. If you listen to the whole interview, Scanlon talks about how her grandson won a youth event and then acted like he was Tiger Woods on top of the world. She’s an absolutely adorable old woman and the interview is worth your time to watch.

While Lowry is over the age of 30, there’s still plenty of time for him to rack up some more wins on the PGA TOUR. And if he builds on this big win, Grandma Scanlon might want to stock up on some more brandy ready to watch her grandson play.
