The Controversial Belly Putter

The Controversial Belly Putter 2 - GolficityThe controversial belly putter first made its presence known to the professional golf world in the late 90s by Paul Azinger and has since become frequently used by many more golfers.  The name, as it implies, has to do with the way in which the longer than usual shaft anchors itself against the golfers “belly”.  The idea being that the stomach anchor serves as a pivot point for making a smooth putting stroke.

Belly putters typically range from about 41-45 inches in length, compared to the traditional short putter which is about 31-36 inches.   The belly putter is often used by golfers who are too “wristy” with putting; hence need the anchor of the belly to support the shaky wrist.    These putters have been controversial since they came into the game and there have even been talks about banning it – potentially very soon.   Some of the pros weighing in on the belly putter controversy include Ernie Els who stated that “they’re going to have a couple of legal matters coming their way” and Tiger Woods who believes that it takes away “the art of controlling the body and club and swinging the pendulum motion.”  Tiger is in favor of a rule requiring that the putter be “equal or less [in length] than the shortest club in your bag.”

Our team has tested the belly putter and ruling controversies asside we like it.  Having the support anchor of the club pressed against the stomach to keep a soft pendulum swing on the ball provides for a feeling of added stability and control.  Shaky wrists and a botched pendulum motion can cause that 1 or 2 inch pull or push off the cup which adds strokes.  The two-handed stroke with the stomach anchor provides stabilization of the wrists, and that’s all it’s designed to do.
