Three Reasons to Know What’s in the Winner’s Bag

I am always fascinated when, on Sunday evening or Monday, a large number of articles and blogs pop up showing everyone what equipment the winner of the tournament played with.  I actually did some research on this just to satisfy my curiosity.

Here are the results that I came up with and the three reasons why you need to know:

  • Reason #1: Curiosity
  • Reason #2:
  • Reason #3:

That is correct.  Other than curiosity there is no reason.  First of all you cannot walk into PGA Super Store or any of the other major retailers and you can’t go online and buy what they play with.  That would be like believing that you can walk into your local Chevrolet dealership and buy the car Dale Earnhardt Jr drives at Daytona.  Those clubs are set up to exactly match that players swing by using the latest technology available.

Even if you could buy the exact same clubs they play with unless you are a tour caliber player you couldn’t hit them.  Also keep in mind that regardless of what the BS marketing department of all the manufacturers, they play that equipment for one reason:  That company pays them the most to play their equipment.  It is certainly not because they personally think it is the best.

One other thing to keep in mind is that when you see these glowing reviews and Hot Lists, it’s because the people writing them get advertising revenues from the companies.  More advertising dollars equals better rating and bad review equals no more advertising dollars.

The bottom line is that the next time you make an equipment purchase, make it based on what looks and feels good to you and not what tour players are using or someone gives it 5 stars.
