Tony Romo Fails to Qualify for the U.S. Open Again

It’s no secret that Tony Romo has a desire to compete in the U.S. Open, as he has attempted to qualify on multiple occasions. This year was no exception, and this year’s attempt ended with the same result.

Romo teed it up at the Gleneagles Country Club in Plano, Texas at a local qualifier this past weekend in hopes of moving forward in the qualifying process. The day didn’t start off well for Tony, as he missed a 10-foot par putt on his first hole of the day. He followed that up with an up and down round that featured some amazing par saves but some disappointing bogies and double bogies.

On the day, Romo finished with a 77, hitting 7 of 13 fairways and 10 of 18 greens in regulation. While the day wasn’t all good for Romo he did have some bright spots, including a beautiful bunker save on the second hole of the day. Romo’s playing partner, Braden Bailey did fantastic, however, shooting a three-under 69.

Despite failing to advance past the local qualifier, Romo shouldn’t be too hard on himself because it’s not that easy of a task. Over 9,049 players entered the field to earn a spot in the U.S. Open and that list will be shortened through multiple events held up to the June tee off. Romo himself hasn’t moved past the local qualifiers except for one time.

Romo’s bad showing shouldn’t discourage him from attempting to qualify in coming years either. He now has more time to work on his game since he is retired and in the broadcast booth during the season, not taking hits from defensive lineman. Romo also held his own in the Dominican Republic this year, when he had the opportunity to play in a PGA TOUR sponsored event.

So while he wasn’t his best this year, the future certainly looks bright for Romo. And if he continues to work on his game, he could move further and further towards that dream of qualifying for golf’s third major of the year.
