Tournament Preview: Deutsche Bank Championship (Aug 31-Sept 3)

Keith Allison - GolficityRound 2 off the FedEx Cup Playoffs begin this Friday at TPC Boston, a Par 71 course that has hosted the Deutsche Bank Championship every year since 2003 and ranks as one of the easiest tracks of the playoffs.  Measuring at 7,214 yards, you can expect some of the lowest scoring numbers of the season on this weekend.

The weather predicts some gusty winds during rounds 1 and 2 and a threat of rain could play a factor this holiday weekend.  It’s always a weird thing to wake up on a Thursday and not have golf on, just like the Hyundai Tournament of Champions earlier in the year.

The field will once again hold golf’s elite as they continue to push forward to the coveted FedEx Cup prize.   Brandt Snedeker is coming off of a runner-up finish at the Barclays and was the only golfer in the field under par in every round.  He placed T5 here in 2010 and T3 in 2011.  It looks like he enjoys turning up the “playoff” volume.

Jason Dufner is back in the field this week after taking a weekend off (his FedEx Cup points allowed him to do so).  He notched six top 10s in nine starts this season with 2 victories.  He finished T2 at TPC Boston in 2009.

Nick Watney certainly has the momentum after winning the Barclays by 3 strokes on Sunday.  The only problem here is that in eight visits to TPC Boston, he’s never finished in the top 30.   Tiger Woods will be back at it with a struggling weekend issue – plays well on Thursday and Friday, but doesn’t show up in rounds 3 and 4.   He could score really well here, but we don’t have him as a favorite this week.

Other notables that could squeeze out a victory in Boston this weekend are Bo Van Pelt who continues to play well this season and the Masters runner-up Louis Oosthuizen.

After this week – we move to the top 30. Happy Labor Day to all.
