Tournament Preview: The 2013 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am

Fresh off a dominating win at TPC Scottsdale last weekend, Phil Mickelson now looks to defend his title at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, and continue to extend his FedEx Cup run. Phil struggled in early January but looks to have found his stroke after calling in golf pro legend Butch Harmon for an emergency lesson two weeks ago.
Pebble Beach Golf Links is a par 72 track that measures 6,816 yards at the tips, making it the shortest course on the PGA TOUR – so watch out for some of those long ball hitters. Although length may be taken out of the equation, the course layout is quite challenging and not easily conquered. To put this in perspective, last year PGA TOUR players averaged 71.857 strokes per round at Pebble Beach.
Something to look out for this week is the tournament’s unique cut. Because there are 3 courses on the grounds, the cut will take place after 54 holes when all 156 competitors have played each course once. The low 60 and ties will advance to the final round at Pebble Beach. Those finishing 61st-70th will be credited with a cut made and will be rewarded with FedEx Cup points and official earnings as the low 25 amateurs will also play on Sunday to determine the pro-am title.
Weather could be an issue for the first two days of the tournament, as temperatures will remain in the mid 50’s all week. Rain isn’t expected to fall until Friday, but winds are already forecast to be moderate through the end of the week. With predictions for consistently gusty winds, we’re sure to see a lot of long sleeves and windbreakers out there, but the sun should heat things up a bit over the weekend.
