Tournament Preview: The 2013 WGC-Cadillac Championship

This week the TPC “Blue Monster” at Trump Doral will play host to the WGC-Cadillac Championship.  This will be the seventh time the WGC-Cadillac Championship has been held at the beautiful Doral course.   With a limited field of star-studded golfers, this no-cut competition will should make for an exciting weekend as water hazards and windy conditions at Doral should challenge even the world’s best.

Fairways at Doral are notoriously hard to hit, and even harder to stay on, so accuracy is going to be key. Last year’s driving-accuracy of 53.41 percent for this event ranked 10th-most difficult of all courses played on TOUR.   Hitting greens in regulation was also a challenge in 2012, as the field averaged just 60.52 percent, to place Doral 13th-lowest of all tracks last year.

As mentioned in our Odds and Predictions segment, the scary par-4 18th hole is among the most difficult on TOUR.  It plays as a dogleg-left that hugging the water and making it the PGA TOUR’s hardest finishing hole in three of the last six years. Last year’s scoring average of 4.539 placed it as the most difficult closer in all non-majors in any season since 2008. Scores can really take a nosedive on 18…and it could get exciting.

Weather should be fair in Miami all week with temperatures in the mid to upper 70s. Wind will always play a factor at this course so watch out for wind, tight fairways, and water to keep low scores at bay. Although none is predicted at this time, rain should never be ruled out in Florida, and there is slight chance we may see some sprinkles one or two days this week.

Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods are back in action this week at Doral and both have a lot to prove as they will once again be under the microscope.  Because of his past record here at Doral, Tiger is coming in as a big favorite in a number of fantasy golf leagues this week.  However, due to his struggles as of late, we’re hesitant to jump on that bandwagon just yet.
