Tournament Preview: The Greenbrier Classic (July 5-July 8)
With Tiger Woods notching his 3rd win of the year (74th all-time), he is certainly the favorite to carry the momentum into this Thursday and extend his win streak. The tournament is being held at the Old White TPC in White Sulphur Springs,West Virginia. In its first year, the Par 70 track offered a generous scoring average of 68.536 and measured a short yardage of 7,031 which has recently been extended to 7,274 yards.
The violent storms that sent the spectators for cover at Congressional last week didn’t affect the playing conditions, however, more inclement weather is forecasted for this week’s tournament.
The field this week is once again robust with notables such as Woods, Simpson, Mickleson, Dustin Johnson, Stricker and Jim Furyk. Woods is the only 3-time winner this year and he ranks 5th in total driving and 10th in GIR. He also ranks No. 1 in FedEx Cup Standings and currently sits at No. 4 in the world.
Webb Simpson, the U.S. Open champion, co-led this tournament after 36 holes last year but finished with a share of 9th place. Some sleeper players to watch out for this week are John Rollins, who ranks 20th in GIR this year, and Seung-Yul Noh who is coming off an impressive T4 at the AT&T National last week. Brendon de Jonge is back in the field this week after holding the 54 hole lead before melting down inMaryland last week.
You can’t bet against Tiger after the laser-like precision he has shown over the last few months. He’s aiming for final tune-up before The Open in Englandon July 19th. This week, we want Tiger.
