Tournament Recap: Tiger Captures Third Win of the Year at Congressional
Tiger Woods passed Jack Nicklaus for 2nd most wins on the PGA Tour at 74 with a thrilling win at Congressional on Sunday. With a 2-under 69 in the final round, Tiger beat Bo Van Pelt by 2 strokes to raise his third trophy of the year.
The AT&T Tournament was bothered by bad rain storms that knocked debris all over the course, not allowing any spectators to attend on Saturday. Woods finished his day Saturday T2 at -5 with only the squirrels in the trees watching – it was quiet. The spectators’ Saturday tickets were honored on Sunday, making the Tiger gallery twice as large – and electric.
After 41 straight bogey-free holes, Tiger bogeyed the par-5 16th, and then took the outright lead with a 6 footer on 17 as Bo Van Pelt bogeyed. With a par on 18, Woods sealed the deal as Van Pelt finished with three straight disappointing bogeys.
Other notables in the field such as Adam Scott rallied to finish 3rd at 5 under, while 2 time 2012 winner Hunter Mahan finished at -3.
The victory keeps Woods ranked at No. 4 in the world behind Donald, McIlroy, and Westwood but boosts him 3 spots to Number 1 on the FedEx Cup Standings. Tiger commented after the round Sunday, “”What an incredible week…thank you for being patient with us. Yesterday was a silent day. I think everyone saved up for today. What an atmosphere to play in front of.”
So is the Tiger Woods of old back? We certainly think so…
Golficity’s Pick: Jim Furyk finished T34 at +5.
