Tournament Recap: Rory Wins Second Major at PGA Championship

The 23-year old boy wonder from Northern Ireland wasn’t just clutch at the 2012 PGA Championship on Sunday, he was flawless.  After what looked like a blow-up hole on number 2 after pulling the ball into a tree, he managed to save the hole and continue on to a phenomenal round.

Rory remained calm throughout the week, especially with the putter in his hand.   After dominating the field in the 2011 US Open with a margin of victory of 8 strokes, McIlroy copied that feat with an 8-stroke win this weekend finishing at 13-under-par 275 on a course Golf Digest rated the toughest in the country.

In regards to runners up…McIlroy beat David Lynn by eight and a group of four players, including defending champion Keegan Bradley.  In response to his poor play earlier in the season McIlroy said, “To be honest, I wanted to go out there and prove people wrong. That’s what I did.  It took me all of four weeks to get my game back in shape and get out of my mini-slump, and this is the result.”

Tiger Woods had another disappointing major weekend finishing in a tie for 11th.  Looks like Tiger will have to wait until next April’s Masters for a shot to end his 4 year major victory drought.  Tiger commented on Rory’s impressive victory, “”We all know the talent he has…He went through a little spell this year, and I think that was good for him…When he gets it going, it’s pretty impressive to watch.”

McIlroy was forced to play 27 holes on Sunday due to a forced weather suspension on Saturday.  It looked as if his stamina kept up with him as he notched a remarkable bogey-free 66 with a 25 foot birdie to cap the feat.

Golficity’s Picks:  Tiger Woods (T11), Keegan Bradley (T4), Jason Dufner (T27)
