TRAGIC: Camilo Villegas’ Young Daughter Passes Away
Some sad news comes from former standout Camilo Villegas.
Many will remember Villegas from about a decade or so ago when he was seen as a young, up and comer on the PGA TOUR. He won three tournaments between 2008 and 2010 and has had a few top-ten finishes in major events. That ended up being Villegas’ glory days, however, as he only notched one more win on the PGA TOUR in 2014 before falling off the charts and starting a family. And his family was rocked with the news of the passing of his 22-month old daughter.
Villegas, now playing on the Korn Ferry Tour, announced back in June at The Korn Ferry Challenge at TPC Sawgrass that his daughter was undergoing medical treatment for health problems. He and his wife noticed their daughter was not acting normally and it was discovered in a medical exam that she developing tumors on her brain and spine. Not much was known at the time and Villegas played through the event.
Young Mia had undergone surgery back in March to remove the tumors but even after that, the Villegas Family was told that there would be more treatment to come to help with persisting issues. As Camilo described it, the process would be something like “baby chemotherapy.” Unfortunately, that was not enough and it was announced this week that Mia passed away.
Villegas has not spoken publicly since the announcement but described his daughter back in June in an extremely loving way. “She always went to the gym with me; it was one of our bonding spots,” Villegas recalled. “She was always like a little monkey, climbing on everything. But then one day, I noticed she had not been climbing on anything. She had also been crying a little more than normal at night. She had been teething, so we took her to the pediatrician, thinking it was that.”
Mia was the only child of the Villegas family and it is impossible to understand the pain that they are going through. We all send our thoughts out to Camilo and his entire family as they deal with this incredibly sad event.
