TRENDING: Hank Haney Goes OB with Recent Comments on LPGA
On May 29th Hank Haney was doing his SiriusXM radio show when he made a comment that has upset quite a lot of people and for good reason. When his cohost Steve Johnson brought up that this week was the LPGA’s 74th U.S. Open he said the following.
Haney: “Oh it is? I’m gonna predict a Korean.”
Johnson, laughing: “OK, that’s a pretty safe bet.”
Haney: “I couldn’t name you six players on the LPGA Tour. Maybe I could. Well … I’d go with Lee. If I didn’t have to name a first name, I’d get a bunch of them right.”

Once word of this started making its way around the Internet, it didn’t take long for people to notice. Michelle Wie was quick to respond.
As a Korean American female golfer, these comments that @HankHaney made disappoint and anger me on so many different levels. Racism and sexism are no laughing matter Hank….shame on you. I don’t ever do this, but this must be called out. https://t.co/P18JByTosN

For someone like Haney who has been around the game for so long it was unexpected to hear him make such a generalized and insensitive comment. Haney later posted an apology regarding his comments.

Time will tell how much his comments impact him. Haney has made a career of helping people regardless of race or gender. Hopefully these comments don’t define his career but they will definitely define the narrative for this weekends LPGA US Open.\
