In a weekend filled with excitement, inclement weather, and a star studded lineup of golfers , the USA Team had redemption on their mind after blowing the lead at the 2012 Ryder Cup. Captain Fred Couples stood near the 18th fairway on Sunday looking on and patiently waiting for the final needed point to drop for victory.
Coming up the fairway was Tiger Woods, a player who’s won the President’s Cup trophy 5 times in his hall-of-fame career. Woods found the 18th green with his approach shot and two-putted for par, sealing a 1-up victory over Richard Sterne which marked the 3rd time in his career that Woods notched the clinching point.
“It was a team effort this whole week,” said Woods, who went 4-1 for best record of any player on the team. “We really played well to give ourselves a nice lead.”
The Americans put forth a strong outing on Sunday and dominated both their opponents, and the rain, which delayed play for quite some time. When Zach Johnson shut down Branden Grace, the Americans netted the coveted 17th points which at worst would force a tie. The rain interrupted play all week, and the players were forced to resume play in the early morning darkness the following day.
When asked about the victory, Captain Fred Couples, who won this trophy as Captain 3 times, was excited about the outcome.
“I must have asked 500 times, `How are we getting this fourth point? Where is the fourth point coming from?'” said Couples. “You’re nervous. Not for the players — the players know what they’re doing. But we knew we needed 18 points, and we got them. It was a very, very good match today. And the matches were all close. At no given time was I a nervous wreck. But it was nice when Tiger two-putted that last green to get the 18th point.”
Everybody contributed on both teams and International Captain Nick Price mentioned that the matches were “incredible to watch” adding that he was extremely honored to steer the ship for the International team.
The 2015 President’s Cup will be played in South Korea on another Jack Nicklaus design.
