Viktor Hovland Splits From Coach that Revolutionized the Weakest Part of His Game
The golf news is starting hot in 2024, with Viktor Hovland making an early personnel change to tackle the season ahead.
Swing coach Joe Mayo is no longer part of Hovland’s team, as per Todd Lewis:
Viktor Hovland is no longer working with swing coach Joe Mayo. Hovland did not want to get into details regarding the split. Last year Viktor worked with Mayo to change his short game mechanics and improved 91 positions in strokes gained around the greens from 2022 to 2023.

His hiring was based on the requirement to improve Hovland’s short game, an area of his game that he admitted was a disadvantage in his otherwise dominant golf repertoire – and that he “sucked at chipping.”

Since working with Mayo, Hovland jumped 91 spots in strokes gained around the green, and obviously had his most successful season to date; three wins, securing the FedEx Cup, contending at the Majors, and securing the Ryder Cup for team Europe.
Like Spieth, Hovland began focusing on a steeper chipping action; with the assistance of his swing coach, he saw the fruits of his labor flourish. The change is surprising and not many details have come to light, but Hovland is not resting the upcoming season – but going on the offensive for 2024!
