Wait, a Set of PXG Irons Costs How Much?

You have to love Bob Parsons.  The billionaire founder of GoDaddy and golf fanatic decided one day that he wanted to get more out of his golf equipment.  So why not start a golf equipment company and use some crazy new technology—which all obviously comes at a significant premium?

Let’s try to figure out if these irons are worth it.

Most of us know the PXG story by now, that’s not news.  PXG, or Parsons Xtreme Golf, could be the next big thing in golf, but it hasn’t seemed to impress the higher net worth yet—well at least that’s who probably can afford them.

But more and more people within my social golf circle are beginning to ditch their Taylormade irons for Mizuno or PXGs.  This leaves me asking why are people shelling out one or two month’s mortgage payments for a set of irons?  And secondly, what handicappers should be using these massively expensive sticks?

Don’t get me wrong, they are the baddest looking irons on the market by far.  These are truly head-turning golf clubs that I would never want to scuff up; a work of art almost.  But what’s so damn special about these golf clubs and why would I ever buy them?

Here’s the deal with PXG, it’s new technology in a space that has been largely unchanged for quite some time.  Year after year the major players release a new line of irons that feature a minor tweak to their aerodynamics, look, and/or feel; but essentially to me, they are all the same.  I’m looking for irons that will give me an edge on the course, but again how do I know if these PXGs are right for me?

Apparently when buying PXG irons you need (or its suggested) you get fitted from a Master Fitter from the various country clubs and shops which can be found on PXG’s website.  I have three fitting experts within 20 miles from my home.

PXG leads us to believe that its their new technology, club face, weighting system, and forgiveness that put the heavy price tag on these irons.  There is a good chance that you can walk out with a bill for $3,000 for a set of these irons and heck, if you buy a whole set of clubs, you’re looking at $5,000!

A Softer Feel

First, PXG claims to use a low-density, vibration-dampening material that allows for a more positive sound and feel.  It also adds stability for their ultra thin club face which adds more energy transfer throughout impact.

The Industry’s Thinnest Club Face

So what’s the importance of an ultra-thin club face?  This face is designed using a high-strength steel.  Their combination of streingth and low-density material allows the ball to travel faster and longer.  That alone is worth the premium price tag in my opinion.

PXG talks about MOI, which stands for moments of inertia.  The thin face allows more mass to be located in the right areas of impact for optimal MOI.  In basic terms, if you strike these irons in the sweet spot, they should jump and fly further and faster than what your normally used to playing.

High MOI for a Blade-Style Head

Here’s where PXG get’s very technical.  They have found a way to remove mass from the center of the club head through milling and strategically repositioning it around the perimeter with tungsten weights.  The end result: much more forgiveness out of the PXG 0311 irons which has been proven to outperform other irons.

Exceptional Feel

PXG irons hare forged using S25C soft carbon steel.  For those of you unaware of what forged irons are, they are exactly that…forged which among other things makes for a tight grain structure, which resonates differently than cast materials and therefore adds to an outstanding impact experience.

So, back to the real question here: who should buy these irons?  From what I’ve researched, single digit to mid-teen handicappers are the ideal market for such a premium golf club.  But definitely get fitted and make sure these clubs help you score better before shelling out a small fortune to buy them.  And, you won’t find much PXG on Amazon or in local stores.  Buying a set of PXG clubs feels more like getting into an elite VIP party than a shopping experience.

Regardless of whether you plan on shelling out the big bucks for a set of PXGs, you have to love how people are having so much fun with their ridiculous price tag.
