Willett Continues Form at Star-Studded Maybank Championship Malaysia
This morning the inaugural Maybank Championship Malaysia was in full swing, with the highest ranking player in the field ending the opening round comfortably in tied second place.
World number 13, Danny Willett, who won the Omega Dubai Desert Classic two weeks ago, shot a great opening round of 65 in Kuala Lumpur, putting him tied with fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood, Angelo Que, Jorge Campillo, Alexander Levy and American Peter Uihlein.
These six players are all one shot behind leader on Nathan Holman, who shot a bogey-free round of 64, and is seeking his second European Tour win of the season.
Despite Danny Willett being the highest ranked golfer in the elite field, he is joined by former major winners Martin Kaymer and Louis Oosthuizen, as well as Europe’s Ryder cup team captain Darren Clarke, who are all competing for the Malaysia title.
Alongside these is Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat, who is hoping to experience his third Asian Tour victory in a country he calls his “second home.”
He said: “Malaysia is like a second home to me…The victory in Malaysia in 2013 really helped me achieve the success which I have today. I like coming back to Malaysia because the people are friendly and I have a lot of fans here.”
