It is every young golfer’s dream to get to play with or against their favorite players on the PGA TOUR. For one teenager, he got to live out his dream and didn’t waste the opportunity.

Something that the European Tour has been doing well is a program that they call “Beat The Pro.” It allows young golfers to join the pros during tournament play and try to play right alongside them. At the 2018 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, 13-year-old Oscar Murphy got his chance to “beat the pros” and he didn’t disappoint.

Murphy certainly got a star studded group to try to beat, joining the group of Dustin Johnson, Tommy Fleetwood, and his favorite player, Rory McIlroy.

Teeing it up at the 15th hole, a 177 yard par 3, Johnson, Fleetwood, and McIlroy all found the green to put pressure on the young Murphy. But the teen wasn’t discouraged at all, as he got up and ripped his 3 wood onto the green, closer than all of the pros except McIlroy.

Even though he wasn’t able to get inside of all of the pros, Murphy impressed everyone in the tee box. “The pin was tucked on the right and he hit this three wood, just faded in to the pin,” said Fleetwood. “An unbelievable shot and me and Rory both said ‘we don’t have that in our locker’.” McIlroy expounded on the comment, saying “Every round I play here I feel like he’s my little mascot. I wasn’t expecting to see him on the tee there – I was a little bit surprised to see him inside the ropes but he hit a great shot.”

Even though Murphy went out there and shocked some of the top players in the world, maybe it shouldn’t have been so shocking that he hit a brilliant shot. Murphy is from Northern Ireland, hence why Rory is his favorite player, and he shoots a six handicap as a 13-year-old. That’s better than most adults and he still has many years to develop to get even better.

It’s pretty awesome that a young kid was able to go out there and hit such an amazing shot next to his idol and I’m sure it’s a moment he’ll never forget. But if Murphy continues to hit shots like that, he may end up creating a lot more memories as a professional himself.
