Fantasy Golf Sleeper Report – 2021 RSM Classic

2021 RSM Classic Fantasy Sleeper Report
Betting on golf is an investigation of human psychology as much as it is biology, and the Houston Open once again proved that to be the case.
In the red corner we had Jason Kokrak, a two-time PGA TOUR winner who had less pressure as the chaser. And then in the blue corner we had Scottie Scheffler, a young man still awaiting his maiden title and who had the added pressure of playing in the final group.
You can probably guess what happened next….
Scheffler bogeyed the first on Sunday, rallied somewhat before making three more bogeys on the back nine to completely derail his chances.
Kokrak, meanwhile, was calm and serene, and his four consecutive birdies on the back nine were enough to propel him to victory – his third in little over the year.
And those are the margins for the humble golf bettor….
But golfing hell hath no fury like a player scorned, and so Scheffler will be thinking of immediate redemption at the RSM Classic – a tournament where he’ll have to play a little bit differently.
Memorial Park was all about bombs off the tee and cuteness around the greens, but there’s a different skillset required on the Seaside course at Sea Island (one of the rounds is played at the Plantation layout, which is as humdrum as it comes).
It’s all about making fairways on the Seaside track, and what’s more the players will have to do so in winds of up to 18mph or higher – no mean feat. And then it becomes something of a putting contest, with these large Bermuda greens pretty difficult to miss. This is classic resort golf, with plenty of birdies thrown in despite the strong breeze.
Scheffler might fancy the job, but he’ll be up against a decent field with perennial Sea Island specialists Webb Simpson and Kevin Kisner, the classy Louis Oosthuizen and the likes of Joaquin Niemann, who looks ready to contend again, also in the conversation.
The last five winners of the RSM Classic all started at odds of 100/1 or longer, and while that makes it sound like something of a lottery, we can still apply some logic and data to come up with a sparkling shortlist for the 2021 RSM Classic.

2021 RSM Classic Fantasy Sleeper Report
Joel Dahmen – 66/1 – Ticking boxes this week is Joel Dahmen, who has the kind of game that can thrive on short and fiddly coastal tracks.
It certainly worked at the Corales Punta Cana, where he picked up his maiden PGA TOUR title, and he has plenty of previous elsewhere in such conditions.
It’s never quite happened for Dahmen on Sea Island, but he heads there this time with a top-five in the bag last time out at the Houston Open, so maybe now is his time to finally cash those chips.
Mito Pereira – 66/1 – What a difference a few weeks can make. At the start of the fall season, Mito Pereira caught the eye with some outstanding approach play – sadly, he couldn’t back it up by making a few putts.
Fast forward to the Houston Open and the Chilean was ranking inside the top ten for SG: Putting, where he compiled his fourth top-40 finish in his last five starts.
It’s notable that he studied in Texas, so maybe Bermuda greens are where he’ll find his feet. If Pereira can combine both elements of his game, he could be very dangerous indeed on the island.
Danny Lee – 75/1 – When you look at his stats, Danny Lee never looks that impressive – but he has a way of getting things done.
That has led to top-10s in his last two PGA TOUR starts, both at correlating courses and the first of which in Bermuda could and probably should have ended with his second PGA TOUR victory.
Lee seems to save his best for these coastal assignments, and with form in the bank you could argue that his odds of 75/1 are a touch on the generous side.
Robert Streb – 80/1 – The defending champion served up a tremendous final round in Houston, producing a fine ball-striking display on his way to 65 in touch scoring conditions.
These little things can make all the difference when heading for an event its evident that he loves, and Streb’s standard skillset – finding fairways and making putts – has worked very nicely for him on Sea Island.
That T7 at the Houston Open followed a T9 at the CJ Cup rather nicely….the omens are very good for another strong showing on the island.
Denny McCarthy – 120/1 – The Bermuda king was back to his usual tricks in Houston last week, rolling the rock beautifully on his favored surface on his way to a T11 finish.
That was his third top-20 return in his last five starts, and so he’s playing well enough from tee-to-green to create plenty of birdie opportunities – that would be very handy heading to Sea Island, where he has a former top-10 to his name.
Some of McCarthy’s biggest paydays on the PGA TOUR have come at the Corales Puntacana and the RBC Heritage, so he’s another that will be eyeing a golden opportunity at Sea Island.
