After news came out that both the PGA Tour and DP World Tour denied its golfers exemptions to skip events of their respective tours to play in the opener of the LIV Golf Invitational Series, it was the talk of both tours prior to their events in Texas and Belgium.

A handful of PGA Tour stars—including Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, and Lee Westwood—and reportedly up to 40 on the DP World Tour requested to play in the first of eight LIV Tour events, taking place in the London area on June 9-11. Both tours have events scheduled that weekend.

As players spoke prior to the first round of the AT&T Byron Nelson in suburban Dallas, many were asked their thoughts about the PGA’s decision, and Justin Thomas, especially, was pointed in his comments.

Thomas said:

“It’s like, ‘Look, if you want to go, go…’ There’s been plenty of guys that have been advocates of it and have just talked it up all the time, and there have been guys behind the scenes that are saying, ‘I’m going, I’m doing this.’ And like my whole thing is, like, just go then.”

The PGA Tour has threatened players with discipline, up to and including lifetime bans for playing without an approved exemption, so Thomas says those players should put their money where their mouth is.

Will Zalatoris, 19th in FedEx Cup standings in his first full season with a PGA Tour card, agreed.

Zalatoris said:

“So we’re trying to promote our best product possible, and if you want to be a part of this where it’s getting better and better, then you shouldn’t have it both ways. You have a choice. You really do. You can go if you’d like, but it is what it is.”

It will be interesting to see who defies the PGA Tour and DP World Tour’s orders, and if that happens, expect things to get messy—lawsuits, legal challenges, courts, etc.
