McIlroy Reflects on Wildly Successful 12 Months and LIV Golf Feud in Expansive Interview
Since being on the losing end of the Ryder Cup just over a year ago, Rory McIlroy reset his game, which dropped a bit from being the top-ranked golfer in the world at the time of the COVID-19 break in 2020. He hadn’t won a tournament after that, and the Ryder Cup loss stung.
From that low, it was straight up for the Northern Irishman. A win at the CJ Cup last year. Defending his title from 2019 at the RBC Canadian Open. Close calls at majors but finishing in the top 10 at all of them. After those high-profile near-misses, winning the big one at the Tour Championship, securing his third FedEx Cup. Finally, a successful defense of his CJ Cup win, settling him back into No. 1 in the Official World Golf Rankings. Up next: a shot at the season-long DP World Tour championship—he will lead the standings going into the final tournament in Dubai next month—and a chance to become the first player to win that tour’s title and the FedEx Cup in the same year.

Along with the success on the course, McIlroy has emerged as a leader on the PGA Tour with LIV Golf coming into the picture this year.
In an interview with The Guardian, the world’s top-ranked golfer spoke about his outspoken nature and how he is choosing to stand up for the golfers on the PGA Tour even though he doesn’t have to.
He said:
“It literally does not affect [my family] one bit. My life is not going to change whether people go to LIV or they don’t. But I care… It mightn’t change our life but it will the guys grinding their asses off to get a tour card. There’s a lot of people in the game who don’t have the voice or the platform I have so I am trying to speak up for them a little, too.”
At the same time, it sounds like the world’s top golfer is looking for a little more peace and stability come 2023.
Rory went on to say:
“This ‘us versus them’ thing has gotten way out of control already… If the two entities keep doubling down in both directions, it is only going to become irreparable. We are going to have a fractured sport for a long time. That is no good for anyone.”

This video also shows how serious McIlroy takes his role as a leader and ambassador on the PGA Tour, signing autographs for everyone who waited while he went through the victory proceedings in South Carolina on Sunday.
As for LIV Golf, the series wraps up its inaugural season this week in Miami, but they will embark on more of a full season next year. They also will be trying to obtain OWGR points to be able to compete in majors, so the battle between the two sides will not be ending anytime soon.
