Davis Love on World Rankings: “I’d Just Get Rid of Them! Who Cares?”
The hot topic in golf right now is the OWGR.
Rory came out in support of it. The next day, Jon Rahm left scathing comments against it.

On SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio, 21-time PGA Tour winner and former Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III said the world rankings are unnecessary. On the topic of world rankings, he was asked, ‘if you were (PGA Tour) Commissioner for the day, what would you do?’
His answer:
“I’d just get rid of them! Who cares? If you win the FedEx Cup, you win the FedEx Cup….
You can solve a lot of things in the golf world right now if you stopped using world golf rankings, and went back to everybody’s money lists.”
Davis Love III had played at a time with no world rankings, instead comparing money lists and who was top of that instead. He said many issues were solved and simplified the process of qualifying for majors, for example.
He recognized the flaw in trying to keep consistency in the rankings, especially when you have world-class players like Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler playing on different tours but sometimes the same and competing at Majors. “It can never be a perfect system,” he said.

College golfers all use different ranking systems, as well as in the junior set-up. It can get quite confusing.
The consensus around the professional game is unclear. Journalists, pundits, players, caddies, and coaches will all weigh in whenever there is an opportunity to change, but if LIV Golfers cannot qualify for ranking points altogether, there will soon be players in the top 50 and top 30 who should not be there. Jon Rahm had suggested giving LIV events a percentage of ranking points, which I believe will be the case before too long. Although there is currently no cut in the events, introducing a cut may add a factor of legitimacy to the 54-hole fixtures.
There is a call for large-scale change, with suggestions that Jay Monahan and Greg Norman need to step aside from their respective executive roles, threatening a turbulent start to the 2022/23 season.
