Paige Spiranac and Others Fire Back at Brandel Chamblee Bias During U.S. Open

For the first time in the seven majors, since a top group of golfers joined LIV Golf, we had a true PGA Tour vs. LIV Golf battle down the stretch.

Yes, Brooks Koepka won the PGA Championship last year, but he wasn’t seriously challenged.

At the U.S. Open on Sunday, Pinehurst No. 2 was delivering yet again – this time with one of the faces of each tour trading the lead on the back nine.

It couldn’t have been more fitting to have Brandel Chamblee as part of NBC’s broadcast crew as Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McIlroy battled down the stretch.

And as the fortunes – so to speak – turned for both golfers on the 18th hole, fans watching accused one of LIV’s biggest critics of not giving DeChambeau his due on an excellent sand shot that ended up being the table-setter for the tournament-winning putt.

Perhaps Chamblee was reacting to McIlroy’s missed putts, which were certainly good fortune for DeChambeau given that McIlroy had been perfect from within three feet before the 16th hole on Sunday.

Afterward, Chamblee did give DeChambeau his due.

Now that the dust has settled, this is the second major in a row where DeChambeau was a big part of the story. But after next month’s Open Championship, we won’t see the now two-time U.S. Open champion tee it off with the world’s best for the rest of the year. That includes the Olympics, where DeChambeau wound up as the sixth-highest U.S. golfer when only the top four qualify.
