Bryson DeChambeau’s Winning U.S Open Secret

Now that the dust has settled from the 124th U.S. Open Championship at Pinehurst Resort, we can attempt to dissect what went right for some and what went wrong for others.

As many anticipated, winning on No. 2 came down to putting on Donald Ross’ cruel, difficult, and unforgiving greens. Indeed, it became commonplace throughout the event that many golfers “visited” greens, watching in despair as wedge shots and even putts slowly trickle off and back into the fairway, a bail-out area, or (in the worst cases) into a green-side bunker.

But while many stuck with their pre-round putting drills (e.g., tee drills and chalk lines), the 2024 U.S Open Champion took a slightly different—and potentially invaluable—approach. Specifically, Bryson DeChambeau was the only person who used his Foresight QuadMAX to putt on the green. Indeed, despite more than 90 players using Foresight Sports products to practice with the other 13 clubs in their bags, Bryson was the only one who utilized his to help his putt.

Among the metrics that Bryson measured were how far back (in inches) he takes the putter head to determine the speed (in MPH) at which the ball will leave the face of the putter. Golf’s Mad Scientist was then able to calculate all the necessary factors to execute his putts.

In addition to the data points Bryson utilized, the QuadMAX also can ball velocity, vertical launch angle, horizontal launch direction, total spin, spin-tilt axis, backspin, sidespin, club speed, smash factor, club path, angle of attack, impact face angle, impact lie, impact location, skid rate, time to full roll, and RPMs at full roll.

While this may be more data than 99% of amateurs need, it is indisputable that having access to information like this during a putting lesson can be the difference between having confidence with your putter and continuing to have nightmares about missing three footers during that important money match.

When the stakes get upped to the professional level, it becomes apparent how much every single shot counts (just ask Rory if he could either one of his missed putts back). So when the course is known for having merciless greens, it is, arguably, unsurprising that the golfer who was the most prepared with his putter raised the trophy yesterday.
