Justin Thomas Sneaks Into TOUR Championship Field on Wild Sunday
While 2024 wasn’t the season Justin Thomas fully hoped for, he at least will be returning to East Lake after a dismal 2023.
After missing the FedEx Cup playoffs for the first time in his career, Thomas did rebound to reach the playoffs this year but needed a strong finish in the BMW Championship to get into the top 30 in points and play for the Tour Championship.
Sitting at +6 after 54 holes, it didn’t look promising for the 2022 PGA Championship winner. But a 4-under 68 on Sunday kept hope alive.
As he finished, he was projected to finish 31st in the standings. Instead of spending an agonizing wait for the field to finish at Castle Pines, he headed back home to South Florida:
“I’m just going home. Going to go to Jupiter. There’s no need for me to sit here and stress this out all afternoon. It sucks, but it’s the position I put myself in.”
While he traveled, things worked out for him.
First, Brian Harman bogeyed the final hole to drop behind Thomas in the standings. Then, Alex Noren bogeyed the final three holes, dropping himself out of the top 30.
That put JT into the field next week at East Lake.

And if he needs inspiration, all he’ll need to do is look at this week’s winner, Keegan Bradley.
If it wasn’t for a rough final few holes from Tom Kim last week, the U.S. Ryder Cup captain wouldn’t have been in the BMW Championship field. After he earned a ticket, he won it.
Along with Harman and Noren, those just missing out also included Jason Day, Davis Thompson, and Denny McCarthy.
