Robert MacIntyre Might Need Thicker Skin Ahead of the Ryder Cup

Robert MacIntyre was in enemy territory this past weekend at the BMW Championship, but his comments after the final round ended proved he might need to get some thicker skin ahead of the Ryder Cup.

MacIntyre found himself up four strokes entering the final round of the second leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. He knew Scottie Scheffler would make it difficult for him to win, but he also noted that the fans at Caves Valley Golf Club were less-than-cordial with him.

He noted on several occasions that fans yelled some choice things at him, obviously favoring their American hero Scheffler. I even watched him back off of a tee shot on Sunday because of a sound behind him, giving a glaring look to whom he suspected made the noise.

On Saturday, he quieted a fan who yelled about a putt he had hit on 16:

However, after his round, MacIntyre talked about the frustration he felt with his game, but also with the fans. An interviewer asked him:

“Obviously a lot of fans here today for Scottie, I think one guy was heckling you on 12 a little bit.”

To which MacIntyre replied:

“How many?”

The interviewer then asked if the tournament officials did a good enough job controlling the hecklers. MacIntyre was candid:

“I’m not going to comment.”

That was the end of his post-round press conference.

If one thing is for sure, MacIntyre is going to have to deal with plenty of flak from fans at Bethpage Black, a U.S. venue that will be filled with passionate and vocal fans. We’ve seen some cross the line at the Ryder Cup in the past, but it’s truly expected with how intense the event tends to get.

Bobby Mac will need to reinforce his thick skin and handle his emotions. The BMW Championship is nothing compared to what the Ryder Cup will offer, and he should know that, considering he’s played in one so far in his career. He is going to be on this next team come September, and he better be ready for some serious vocalization, especially now that fans know he doesn’t respond well to it.
