Here’s Why Bryson DeChambeau Excites Me
I haven’t been this excited about an amateur turning professional since Tiger Woods did it in the summer of 1996. Now don’t get me wrong, I am not comparing him to Tiger, only my anticipation of seeing what he can do.
The young man is brilliant and has already made some headlines with his golf clubs. Unless you have just escaped from a kidnapper that kept you in complete isolation, you know that his irons are all the same length and he gives the scientific reasons behind this.
Cobra/Puma must feel a little like I do because they just signed him up. He will, however, keep playing his customized Edel irons he had used in his amateur victories, at least for a while. He has been playing the Bridgestone Tour B330-S since his amateur days and had to buy them. He has scientific reasons for that also. I applaud him for that because I have felt for years that it is a least as good as anything Titleist makes.
He is often referred to as a combination of “part athlete, part scientist, part artist.” In Tuesdays press conference he referred to himself this way; “I am an artist.”
I don’t know how the week will turn out for him but at this point he tied for seventh at the RBC Heritage in Harbor Town. He finished tied for 21st at the Masters and has made his last seven cuts. He has his maximum of seven sponsor’s exemptions of which this week is one. He also gets to play in the Memorial and Quicken Loans National because of his amateur play. Any time he finishes in the top 10 he is automatically into the next event and it doesn’t count against him. The bottom line is that he has to figure out a way to play himself into the top 125 by the end of the season to be exempt for next year’s tour.
I also love his attitude. Trust me, everybody remembers his first round as a professional and this is what he had to say about it;
“I just thought of it as just another tournament. It is my first start as a professional and I wasn’t thinking much more than that. It’s just another tournament, let’s go out there and play some good golf.”
I also love how he is dealing with the fans. You can’t afford to do this as an amateur and buying it yourself.
I think it is really going to be fun and exciting to watch this young man as his future develops.
