Dustin Johnson Wins WGC-Mexico Championship

If there was any doubt about if Dustin Johnson deserved to be the no. 1 golfer in the world, he put all of that to rest this weekend.  In his debut as the world’s top golfer, Johnson took the victory at the WGC-Mexico Championship.

While he was able to take the victory, there was plenty of adversity he had to overcome that provided for an exciting end to the tournament.  Going into the back nine with a four-shot lead, Johnson was surprised by rookie Jon Rahm who eliminated Johnson’s lead with an eagle and two birdies to open his back nine.  Thanks to Rahm’s collapse late in the round, however, Johnson was able to eek out a one-shot victory in the end.

With his victory, Johnson became the fifth player in PGA TOUR history to win his first tournament after claiming the no. 1 ranking.  Johnson also notched his fourth World Golf Championship win, putting him in second place in all-time WGC wins behind Tiger Woods.

DJ was happy to take the victory in his first tournament as the best golfer in the world but even admitted that he didn’t play his best golf.  “I didn’t feel like I putted my best, but I really hit the ball well,” Johnson said.  “I played just well enough, because I won by one.”

The player he beat by one stroke was 26-year old Tommy Fleetwood, who had a great round himself.  Fleetwood buried a 40-foot putt on his final hole that put him into second place by himself.  That position will ensure the Fleetwood will be playing in his first ever Masters this coming April.

Overall, it seems like the WGC-Mexico Championship was a great success for the first time the event was played there and players like Johnson and Fleetwood will hope to take some of their momentum through the rest of the month and into the major season.
