Dustin Johnson Looking to Return at Wells Fargo Championship

After suffering an injury to his back that caused him to withdraw from the Masters last week, Dustin Johnson’s future emerged as murky for the rest of the year.  At the conclusion of the Masters, however, a timetable for his return is becoming more clear.

The winner of three straight events that he participated in, Johnson was originally injured after falling down the wooden steps of the home he was renting while staying at Augusta.  While the back injury that he suffered has been defined as serious, Johnson is said to be looking at a return to the course in early May, to participate in the Wells Fargo Championship.

With the Wells Fargo Championship set to be played May 4-7th this would give Johnson about three weeks to rest before making an attempt to return to the course.  This apparently was a plan all along, however, because Johnson stated after he withdrew that he was planning on taking three weeks off after the Masters before he was injured.

Even if this was the plan all along, the question will remain for the next three weeks of how effective Johnson will be once he returns to the course.  Despite the positive reports that are coming from Johnson’s physician that say he is “improving by the day,” there were also positive reports before he was set to tee off on Thursday but after taking some practice swings, Johnson decided he couldn’t go out.

If the reports are as positive as indicated and Johnson is able to return for the Wells Fargo Championship, that will seemingly put him right back on schedule to be a compete and defend his U.S. Open Championship.  And it seems that many experts are expecting him to be ready for the next major, as Johnson has opened up as the favorite to win the next major on the schedule.

Even though he will not be competing for the next three weeks, it seems like most eyes will be on Johnson’s recovery and it will be interesting to see if his timetable for a return remains on track so he can compete in the biggest events remaining on the PGA TOUR this year.
