Jordan Spieth Using New Caddie at Australian Open
With it being a little too cold to play in most parts of the United States, golf has moved down under to the Australian Open. Jordan Spieth is the defending champion and has returned to defend his crown under unique circumstances.
Ever since entering the PGA TOUR as a professional, Spieth has used one caddie and one caddie only for his tournaments. Michael Greller is the man that Spieth has trusted the duties of carrying his bag and has been there for all of Spieth’s victories, including his three major titles. But heading back down under to compete for back to back Australian Open championships, Greller will not be by Spieth’s side.
While Spieth decided to compete in the event that started on Thanksgiving Day, he decided to follow in the footsteps of many employers during the holidays and give his caddy the tournament off. While Greller likely would have made it otherwise, his wife also gave birth to their first child a little over a month ago. So this gave Greller the opportunity to spend time with his new child and enjoy the holidays.

Carrying Spieth’s bag in Australia has now fallen on the shoulders of his swing coach, Cameron McCormick. McCormick has never carried Spieth’s bag but has coached him for years. McCormick was also ranked as one of the top 50 golf teachers in the game recently. In comparing McCormick and Greller, Spieth said that “Cam is more, ‘just shut up and hit it. Quit taking so long’. He’s more reaction.”
McCormick has done an ok job playing with Spieth thus far, as the duo is sitting at one-under par through two rounds, eight shots back of the leader, Jason Day. Despite the moderate success, Spieth has to be itching to get Greller back on his bag. The only other times Spieth has played without him as a professional were when he Greller was injured in Singapore for a round and two occasions where he was sick for a day.
So unlike other times when a top golfer experiments with a new caddie, it doesn’t look like Greller is in any danger of being replaced. We wish his family a happy holiday weekend and can’t wait to see him working with Spieth again.
