Every Serious Golfer Should Try a Custom Putter Fitting
Last week Mike and I had the opportunity to go for a full custom putter fitting workup at Club Champion in Hackensack, NJ. Now, anyone who listens to The Golf Podcast knows this is something I’ve been dying to do for quite some time.
I’ve been fitted for irons before, and even more recently I had the chance to get a driver fitting from some of the best fitters in the game (Pete’s Golf at Golf & Body NYC). But as for my putter…that club had been neglected for far too long.
And I really have no excuse either. After all, you’ve heard us say on the podcast that your flat stick accounts for about 40% of your scoring on the golf course. And besides, a soup-to-nuts custom putter fitting only costs about $100, and it will last you more seasons than any driver fitting.
So clearly I went into this with high expectations, but even those were blown away.
A few puts on the SAM PuttLab and the guys at Club Champion knew literally EVERYTHING about my putting stroke. Armed with that info, they got right to work finding me some putter options with tiny (but crucial) adjustments needed to have me smacking that sweet spot every time.
In my particular case, I needed a shorter putter shaft which got my eyes more directly over the ball (I was missing the sweet spot out towards the tow because my longer shaft had me leaning too far over the putter head), as well as a slightly deeper offset, and a balanced face (as opposed to my current toe hang putter).
The results spoke for themselves.
The only, and I mean ONLY, downfall was that the particular putter they fit me for was a bit out of my price range (an eye-popping $550). However, that doesn’t mean that I won’t still find the right putter for my putting stroke. As part of the fitting I walked out of there with a detailed printout telling me everything I need to know about the right putter specs for me. Now I can get to work trying putters that match my equipment needs (shorter shaft, balanced face blade, and a slightly deeper offset) and fit in my price range.
All-in-all this was an experience I highly recommend every serious golfer try. It might just be the best $100 you ever spend on your golf game.
