Fantasy Golf Sleeper Report – The Dell Technologies Championship

2018 Dell Technologies ChampionshipFantasy Sleeper Report
One week of the FedExCup post-season playoffs down, three to go.
Bryson DeChambeau kicked things off in fine style by winning The Northern Trust last week with a comfortable four-stroke victory over Tony Finau and the rest of the field. It was a triumph for golfing science, with DeChambeau seemingly hopelessly out of form lately.
But sticking to the principles that you believe in is often crucial for long-term success, and the 24-year-old’s methods – love them or not – clearly work for him.

DeChambeau is now ranked number one in the FedExCup standings, with 98 of the 99 players below him – the absentee is Francesco Molinari, who has decided to have the week off – teeing up at this week’s Dell Technologies Championship at TPC Boston in Norton, Massachusetts.
This Arnold Palmer layout was given something of a rework by Gil Hanse and Brad Faxon in 2007, although the overall emphasis is on a general ease of scoring – there are birdie opportunities and holes where making par is key, with driveable Par 4s and tricky Par 5s both making their presence felt at a course where the front nine is markedly easier than the back nine.
The generously-proportioned fairways are fringed with long fescue grass, while the Bentgrass greens run rather fast on the stimpmeter – although potentially slowed by rain showers that have been forecast.
Justin Thomas is our defending champion – he bested Jordan Spieth 12 months ago, and the list of recent winners is a rather classy affair with Rory McIlroy, Henrik Stenson, Rickie Fowler and Webb Simpson all featuring.
Is there scope for a sleeper to win the Dell Technologies Championship? You bet, but which should you be focusing on?

The Dell Technologies ChampionshipFantasy Sleeper Report
Billy Horschel – Vegas Odds 55/1 – He’s been playing some fantastic golf at the moment and at a venue where he has finished second in the past that bodes very nicely.
His tee-to-green game is in fine fettle right now, and he actually gained strokes on the field in all areas at The Northern Trust, where he finished T3.
That followed a T11 at the Wyndham Championship, and so a former FedExCup champion finds himself in equally good form right now. Could Horschel be heading for more post-season glory?
Tyrrell Hatton – Vegas Odds 66/1 – The Englishman has a lot on his plate this week.
He currently sits 71st in the FedExCup standings, and so needs a solid showing in order to book his spot at the BMW Championship, and of course a continuation of his good form will secure a Ryder Cup berth.
With top-10s in the US Open and PGA Championship and at the Scottish Open in July, backed by a decent top-20 return at The Northern Trust where he closed out with a 64 and ranked eighth for Strokes Gained: Tee to Green, Hatton is in great form.
And with plenty to play for in Boston, he will be hoping to add another high finish to his collection.
Aaron Wise – Vegas Odds 80/1 – The youngster was outstanding at The Northern Trust, gaining strokes from tee-to-green, around the green and when putting to finish fifth.
That comes shortly after T6 at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational, so clearly Wise’s game is in a good place right now.
The 22-year-old is already a winner on the PGA TOUR and the Web.com Tour, and you wonder if his career is set to take a similar trajectory to Xander Schauffele’s, who won his second title during the FedExCup playoffs last season.
Confidence with the short stick is a welcome addition for a player who finished T6 here 12 months ago.
Cameron Smith – Vegas Odds 100/1 – While 2018 hasn’t quite been the breakthrough year many thought it might be for Cameron Smith, but it’s still been pretty good all the same!
The Australian has recorded six top-10 finishes, including a T5 at The Masters and T3 at The Northern Trust just last week.
An excellent short game is where Smith earns his corn, and that should bode well at this TPC Boston layout.
Daniel Berger – Vegas Odds 100/1 – Despite complaining of a wrist injury, Daniel Berger is playing some excellent golf at the moment.
He finished T12 at the PGA Championship and ranked 12th for Strokes Gained: Tee to Green, and at last week’s The Northern Trust he recorded a T15 finish and ranked fourth for Strokes Gained: Putting. As such, all aspects of his game are in good condition.
We have mentioned that quality ball-strikers are the way forward this week, and perhaps one day we will look back on Berger’s career and categorize him as exactly that.
