STOLEN: Another Pro, Another Stolen Bag of Clubs
If there has been an alarming trend that seems to be following golfers this year, it’s the constant thievery of golf clubs from underneath the noses of players. This has been striking the PGA TOUR mostly this year, but now it looks like the thefts have hit the women’s circuit.
This week marks the beginning of the first major on the LPGA Tour schedule, the ANA Inspiration. Annie Park was looking forward to the event since it is the first time she’s participated in the event. The excitement for the young player was palpable until she woke up Thursday morning to a disaster. She awoke to find the back window of her car bashed in and her clubs missing.
As anyone would probably react in that situation, Park freaked out for a few minutes before realizing that she had to scramble to find new clubs to compete with by her tee time. That’s when her team really went to work to scrape together a usable set. That included taking some irons and wedges from her caddy’s bag as well as buying a Callaway driver and a putter from the Mission Hills pro shop.
Luckily for Park, she was able to get all of the clubs she needed before starting her round and it seemed to work out for a while. She was actually tied for the lead at one point during her first round before having a bit of a collapse that left her close to a potential cut line. Much of this problem, she believes, is caused by not being comfortable with the clubs and not knowing her distances.
Despite this growing problem, Park didn’t have time to get a new set of her preferred clubs sent to her for her second round on Friday. That means she had to use that hodgepodge of clubs to compete again on Friday in hopes of making it to the weekend. Unfortunately for Park, her second round went just as bad as her first and she will almost certainly miss the cut, sitting at +10 for the tournament.
It’s a shame that a young player had to scramble like this on top of playing in her first major championship. Hopefully, her clubs will be located and she will be able to get back to her game before any other big tournaments.
