PRES CUP: Will Tiger Elect Himself For The Presidents Cup?
Tiger Woods is leaving his fate to play in the Presidents Cup up to the eight automatic qualifiers on the team. Tiger is the captain and he can pick himself if he wants to but he’s leaving that decision up to his team.
“It’ll be fun to talk to [vice-captains] Fred [Couples] and Stricks [Steve Stricker] and Zach [Johnson] and the eight guys about who do they want on the team. Some of the guys who are going to keep playing who are outside of the top eight showed some game and we’ll have a lot of communication with those players as well,” he told GolfTV. “I’ve gotta talk to the vice-captains and the top eight guys and whether or not they want me to play in Australia.”
The eight automatic members who need to want Tiger to compete with them on the team are Brooks Keopka, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay, Webb Simpson, Bryson DeChambeau, Xander Schauffele and Matt Kuchar. Its hard to say no to living legend and if he not so subtly hints that he wants to play, I doubt they will say no but after failing to make it to the Tour Championship, Tiger may not but the best possible pick to compete.
The Presidents Cup is set to take place from December 11th to December 15th at Royal Melbourne in Australia. After winning the Masters in April, Tiger looked like a lock to make the Tour Championship and contend in the remaining three majors. After a few missed cuts and a WD late in the year, his 2019 PGA season has come to an end.
If Tigers goal is to win the Presidents Cup as a captain he may want to consider putting his best foot forward and take a back seat. Players like Patrick Reed who has finished the season on a high note along with having a history of success in team play or Tony Finau who actually showed up to play during the Ryder Cup last year are solid picks for the team. The decision is ultimately Tigers.
The PGA tour is packed with young American talent eager to make their mark on the tour. The question is will Tiger bet on himself or will he take a step back, paving a way for younger talent to make their own history?
