Rory McIlroy Breaks Tiger’s Remarkable Record

While there is a great argument on who is better at the current moment, Tiger Woods or Rory McIlroy, I think everyone can agree that they’re both amazing players. And now, they have both held an unbelievable record.

Since both Rory and Tiger are two of this generation’s most accomplished golfers, it’s no surprise that they are often jockeying for the same records. Mostly, these are records that Tiger has already held and Rory is coming for or has already surpassed Tiger in. But the one record that Rory just took from Tiger is really going to blow your mind.

This week, Rory officially passed Tiger as the youngest player to ever be in the top ten of the World Golf Rankings for 500 weeks. That mark would be 30 years and 6 months old, beating the record previously held by Tiger by just three months. When Rory found out he had beaten that record, he was shocked, stating on Instagram that it’s the first thing he’s ever beat Tiger at.

To clarify, this is not consecutive weeks in the top ten, just total weeks. Nonetheless, that is definitely impressive in itself but I don’t think anyone is ever going to break Tiger’s record of being number one in the World Golf Rankings. Going back to the last time that he ranked as number one when he was 33 years old, Tiger spent a ridiculous 574 weeks at that spot. That’s just over 11 years!

As for this record that Rory just broke, it doesn’t look like anyone who’s turning pro right now is ever going to have a chance to break it. Consider the math that was completed by Twitter user Nosferatu using Joaquin Niemann as an example. “If you just turned 21 (e.g. J. Niemann) and somehow you just cracked the top 10, it would be impossible for you to break Rory’s record,” Nosferatu reported.

It certainly looks like that record is safe for a long time, if not forever. But, then again, that’s probably what everyone said when Tiger first set that mark. So, if you know any young golf prodigies out there that you think can beat Rory’s mark, make sure you get them to turn professional as soon as possible.
