REVOKED: Man Loses Golf Membership for Playing too Much
When you join a golf club as a member, you do so thinking that you’re going to play a lot of golf at the course. But is there such a thing as playing too much at the club? Apparently, this is indeed a fact for one golf club in the United Kingdom.
According to a report from The Times in the United Kingdom, Australian man, John Cawood, is suing the Sunningdale Golf Club for revoking his membership because he played there too much. The 72-year-old Cawood was an overseas member, paying approximately $1,500 a year to be a member at the course and the club is reporting that he played as many as 30 rounds a year as recently as 2015.

Cawood stated in court that he has been a member of the club since 1997, when he claimed to be spending only 3 months in the UK every year, making him eligible for the overseas membership. Sunningdale claims that full-time members of the club began complaining that Cawood was abusing his membership starting back in 2011.
Sunningdale also claimed in court that between 2014 and 2015 that Cawood stayed in the UK for 11 months. Even though he only has a travel visa that allows him to stay in the country for 6 months at a time, his partner is a British citizen, allowing Cawood to stay past his visa and, in turn, play more at the golf club.
Sunningdale has also claimed that Cawood was one of the club’s 30 most active players for the past few years and they said that they warned him about the issue before revoking his membership. Cawood, however, has been claiming that he was never told of the issue and that the membership was simply revoked. It is sounding like this will be an ongoing legal battle…
It’s easy to see the gripe that Sunningdale has with Cawood due to the fact that full-time members pay $5,500 annually while paying a one time $75,000 initiation fee. It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out and hopefully, a nice outcome is found for both sides.
