For golf fans, Tony Romo is the most popular celebrity that tends to pop on the radar a few times a year. The former Dallas Cowboys QB and current CBS broadcaster has officially committed to his first event of the year.

It was announced that Romo will be returning to the professional golf scene in mid-April. Romo will be playing on the Korn Ferry Tour’s Veritex Bank Championship, at the Texas Rangers Golf Club, in Arlington, Texas. Romo will be playing on a sponsor’s exemption that is just a few miles away from where his football career took off.

Romo has already warmed up for the year, playing earlier this month at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am with Jim Furyk. The tandem finished at -13 over the first two days. However, that wasn’t enough to make the cut as they fell just a few strokes short. Even with that taste of professional action, Romo hasn’t competed in a real tour event since the 2019 Safeway Open.

Romo seems pretty hyped to be back in official competition for the first time in 2020. “I am very excited about the opportunity to play at the Veritex Bank Championship against the future PGA TOUR stars,” Romo said in a statement. “Playing in the shadows of AT&T Stadium and having the tournament in my own backyard will be great. I have been working hard on my game and hope to make a little noise during the championship.”

Something else about Romo that could be intriguing to watch this year is that he is currently the highest sought after broadcasting free agent in football. In the past, reports have said that CBS (Romo’s current network), put restrictions on what golf events Romo could participate in. Perhaps if Romo lands somewhere else, or renegotiates terms with CBS, we might be seeing a lot more of him on the course during the football season.

Fans shouldn’t get too excited as Romo’s performances have mostly been duds at the pro level. However, who’s to say that won’t change this year? Regardless, people will love seeing what he can do in Arlington, as the fans will see if he can finally turn the corner to compete.
