Imagining being the best at your sport, retire on top, and be able to play golf every day. Dream come true, right?

I’m sure by now sports fans everywhere have seen episodes 1 & 2 of ‘The Last Dance”,  a 10 part series documentary of Michael Jordan’s life. One thing that stood out to me, was MJ’s love for the game of golf.

During the documentary, Jordan was shown playing a round of golf before a conference playoff matchup with the Boston Celtics. You would think before a huge playoff game MJ would be in the gym working on layups or even working out, but no, Jordan was playing golf.

His love of the game of golf would eventually turn into him having a course of his own.  Something I’m sure he has always visioned.

The Grove XXIII was built on a nice sized piece of property for Michael Jordan and not only was it course built for him, but it was inspired by Shinnecock Hills, a course that has held The U.S. Open many times.  This makes me wonder, do you think The Grove could potentially host a U.S. Open?

In a recent Golf Digest post, the story behind the build was laid out pretty clear.

“We started to gradually raise this land where the clubhouse is, and as we did, we realized we had views across the whole course,” he says. “We could see everything.”   Stated, Senior design associate, Chris Monti.

The article then went on to say,

The vastness of the property and the sandy, grass-covered spaces between the holes reminded Weed and Monti of the famed U.S. Open venue on Long Island”

By just looking at the pictures, this course seems to be the toughest of them all. The links-style layout sidelined by knee-high rough leaves little margin for error and would give the average 15 handicappers a tough time.  But, it should be no test for a dominant player like MJ.

He recently was quoted saying that he was a four handicap, and I believe it. Jordan’s teammate and friend, Scottie Pippen, told ESPN, that Jordan bought him clubs as a rookie just so he can take his money on the golf course. Nice friend right?
