I’ll PASS: Lee Westwood Won’t Play On PGA TOUR
One player that is showing signs of potential talent problems on the PGA TOUR is Lee Westwood. Westwood doesn’t have a PGA TOUR card this season but he has been playing so well that he’s climbed up to #31 in the World Golf Rankings. Because of that ranking Westwood is now eligible to qualify for the Charles Schwab Challenge and RBC Heritage in June, as well as the PGA Championship in August. But Westwood isn’t planning on playing in any of them.
“Right now, I won’t be playing them,” Westwood told Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis. “Not with having to leave here two weeks before, quarantine, then play the two tournaments, then come back here and quarantine again. It’s six weeks for two tournaments. To me, that’s just not worth it, and it’s just not worth taking the risk and everyone thinks those kind of precautions have to be in place, I don’t think golf is a priority if it’s that severe.”
Even if Westwood had wanted to play in the PGA Championship, it would have been an incredibly difficult task for him to complete. He is hosting the British Masters across the pond just a week before the PGA Championship is scheduled to kick off. So to be able to play, he would have to quarantine for two weeks, missing the event he hosts.
This could prove to be a dilemma for many players that are hoping to play on the PGA TOUR if it truly does restart this upcoming month. Many who are not in the U.S. already will have to go through a grueling process to get into the country even if they want to play. Plus they will have to quarantine and risk bringing themselves and their loved ones in contact with the virus.
While I would imagine that many golfers won’t be taking Westwood’s approach for upcoming events, he does raise very valid concerns that all players should consider. Hopefully, everything will stay on course and players will be able to get back to the tee box in June without having as many concerns.
