Rickie Fowler Gets Hot But Not Enough to Take Down Rory & DJ

Golf. Is. Back. Kind of. It’s no Sunday at Augusta, but it’s some live golf on NBC to close out the week, as we are so accustomed to. As we’ve seen in matches like these, they start out with a ton of chirping and fun remarks, but as they get closer and more intense, it gets a whole lot quieter.

Rickie Fowler had 6 birdies, but it wasn’t enough to hold off Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson who they raised $1.85 million for COVID-19 relief to Wolff/Fowler’s 1.15 million. It came down to the very end on a 120 yard closest to the pin, where Rory took 6 skins and $1.1 million. Personally, I hated this ending and I think Fowler and Wolff earned a win, but that’s not what today was about (unless you gambled on it like I did). Jokes aside though, it was a great event that got us back to live sports for a great cause.

Here are some of the takeaways from Sunday’s action:

Rickie carried Matthew Wolff score wise for most of the round, but we saw the raw power he can generate with that funky swing of his, winning both of the long drive challenges. Wolff hit it 356 yards on hole number 2 at Seminole Golf Club and 368 (!) on hole number 14. Even though he was hitting with some #BoomSauce all day, he still felt grateful enough for Rickie’s play to offer to carry his bag.

The guys were all a little bit rusty, as you could expect after a long layoff. They mentioned on the broadcast that Dustin Johnson had taken 40 days off without playing (I’ll top you on that one DJ, I spend half the year in Syracuse, New York). I think I counted DJ splashdown in the water 4 times throughout the round, Wolff had some first tee jitters and blocked it out about as far off as I do on the first tee to start off my Sunday rounds (shoutout Silvermine GC). He also got absolutely obliterated with this savage chirp from Matthew Wolff referring to when DJ grounded his club and cost himself a major 10 years ago.

I saw a lot of talk on Twitter about the players wearing shorts, and pretty much 100% of it was positive. I think there’s a lot of people in the “old man” golf media that have thought it’s an unprofessional look to wear shorts, but I think that was disproven today. They all looked sharp, and it was also pretty funny to see them carry their own bags and even shoot distances all day.

It was great to have not only golf back today, but live sports. And it’s really looking up for us, as we have the Tiger-Phil and Manning-Brady match next week, followed by the Charles Schwab Challenge coming up on June 11th. Hopefully everything starts back up real soon, and our Pin High Podcast can get back to giving you regularly scheduled content!
