The TOUR Championship 2020 Fantasy Sleeper Report

So here we are: after months of incredible action, we’re down to the final 30 players to contest the finale of the FedExCup playoffs – the TOUR Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia.

The final standings could not be more finely poised, with Dustin Johnson starting the week at -10 with the likes of Jon Rahm (-8), Justin Thomas (-7) and Webb Simpson (-6) breathing down his neck. There is everything to play for as we cap the 2019-20 season in style.

Rahm has managed to navigate his way to an advantageous position after winning the BMW Championship last week. It was a fascinating event played at a really tough host course at Olympia Fields, and the lead flip-flopped all the way through to Sunday, where easier conditions allowed the Spaniard and Johnson to power clear of the field.

DJ needed to drain a huge 44-footer at the last to force hie way into the playoff, and so you can only imagine that he had to laugh when Rahm nailed a 60-footer on the first extra hole to clinch his fifth PGA TOUR title.

Johnson goes into the TOUR Championship as a red-hot favorite, but he has never quite managed to get the job done at East Lake, and despite the course suiting his exceptional ball-striking capabilities you do wonder if that will have an impact come the close on Sunday.

The job in hand at East Lake is to hit the ball long and straight, and there aren’t many that do that as consistently well as DJ on the Tour. The tree-lined fairways will catch out any errant tee shots, while the rough is long enough that it is necessary to avoid it.

The Bermuda greens will run sharply too, with some super-slick run-off areas meaning that approaches not hit to the inch could say goodbye to the dancefloor. Then it becomes a real mission to get up and down for par.

That’s worth mentioning because there are only two Par 5 holes on this Par 70 real estate, and to make up the 7,319 yardage there are plenty of long old Par 4s – a number of them measure 450+ yards, and so there will be lots of lengthy approaches into these tough greens to hold, hence why the winning score here has averaged around -12 in recent times.

The nature of the TOUR Championship pre-leaderboard means that it’s going to be very difficult to get a sleeper winner over the line, however if your sportsbook is offering standard strokeplay odds – i.e. where every player starts on level par, then here are some sleepers to consider at hug prices this week.

The TOUR Championship Fantasy Sleeper Report

Tony Finau – 50/1 – Pretty much every week without fail, the sportsbooks put Tony Finau up at a price that is simply too short to back.

But at 50/1 and longer, the big man is certainly worth a second look given how consistent he is – Finau finished inside the top-10 in approximately 33% of his PGA TOUR starts this season.

That elusive proper win – Puerto Rico Open aside – continues to escape him, and sometimes that’s been because he’s a poor closer but also occasionally because somebody has simply put in a supersonic round on the Sunday. The key thing is that you’re in a position to keep knocking on the door, because eventually you’ll be let in.

Finau’s obvious ball-striking talents have been matched by a upturn with the flat stick of late, and so maybe – just maybe – his time has finally arrived.

Patrick Reed – 66/1 – It would be typical of Patrick Reed to just rock up in Atlanta this week and take home the trophy.

He’s looked out of sorts these past few weeks, but good form isn’t all that far away – T13 at the PGA Championship, T9 at the Wyndham Championship, and Captain America is not somebody who can accused of shying away on the biggest of stages.

His ball-striking was very good at Sedgefield, and if he can find that sort of rhythm again here in the state of his finest achievement in golf to date then Reed can make a mockery of his odds here.

Brendon Todd – 125/1 – With one of the most consistently excellent short games around, Brendon Todd is able to make hay even at courses which don’t necessarily suit his natural preference.

It may be that he is too short off the tee to really contend this week, but in Todd you’re at least putting your money on one of the most reliable putters around – that’s always a great place to start.

A two-time winner this season who finished inside the top-10 at the BW Championship last week, here we have a player in-form who is not afraid to get over the winning line.

Joaquin Niemann – 150/1 – Normally somebody we favour in Bentgrass events, there was so much class to Joaquin Niemann’s game at the BMW Championship that we simply cannot ignore him this week.

The Chilean was going head-to-head with Rahm and Johnson towards the business end of that tournament, and while things didn’t go his way it was proof once more that Niemann is an absolute stud in the making.

An iron play wizard, Niemann is always seemingly just a hot putter away from contending for many, many more trophies on the PGA TOUR.

Billy Horschel – 200/1 – A player with fond memories of the FedExCup playoffs, we’re always inclined to give Billy Horschel a go in Par 70 events played on Bermuda.

The Floridan thrives on these surfaces, and as one of the best Par 4 players around clearly Par 70 tournaments are those which make the most of his skillset – it’s no surprise that in three trips to East Lake his formline reads 1-2-7.

Solo second in the Wyndham Championship a couple of weeks ago, Billy Horschel is a must play at 200/1.
