One of the biggest questions going into Tuesday’s announcement of the six U.S. Ryder Cup team’s Captain’s picks by Zach Johnson is whether Justin Thomas or Brooks Koepka will be on the team.

Based on a report from The Guardian, the answer to that question could be: both.

Koepka, who only participated in four events this year where he earned Ryder Cup points thanks to his LIV Golf schedule, was in an automatic qualifying spot thanks to his runner-up at The Masters and win at the PGA Championship.

But after last week’s BMW Championship, Koepka fell out of the top six and will have to rely on a wild-card selection from Johnson.

Thomas has been a Ryder Cup constant since 2017, but he went through his worst season professionally in 2023. The 2017 FedEx Cup champ and 2022 PGA Championship winner didn’t win a tournament this year and missed the playoffs for the first time. But many cite his record in the Ryder Cup as a reason for inclusion on Team USA.

The Guardian report says that both Koepka and Thomas will be chosen, along with Rickie Fowler, Jordan Spieth, and Collin Morikawa.

If that’s true, that leaves one spot for the following: Cameron Young, Keegan Bradley, Sam Burns, Tony Finau, and Lucas Glover, among others.

Glover is the hot hand, having won both the Wyndham Championship and FedEx St. Jude Championship in the past month. Bradley won twice this season, and Burns was victorious at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play event. Finau struggled in big events but won four times on the PGA Tour since July 2022.

Automatic qualifiers for the U.S. team are Scottie Scheffler, Wyndham Clark, Brian Harman, Patrick Cantlay, Max Homa, and Xander Schauffele. The Ryder Cup takes place Sept. 29-Oct. 1 from Marco Simone Golf Club in Rome.
